ICONIC HALSTON

If you know your vintage, you’ll hear the word "Halston"and think Studio 54 – glamorous, floor length frocks, Bianca Jagger astride a white horse (literally, not metaphorically) and timeless, floaty elegance meets dresses to dance in.

Roy Halston Frowick, known to most by his middle name, Halston, was an iconic designer of the 1970s His long dresses are synonymous with that era, and his shimmering, floatatious layers and one-shouldered creations were the discoteque darlings of the time.

After relocation to New York and time spent working with milliner, Lilly Dache, led to a position at prestigious department store Bergdorf Goodman in their customer milliner salon. It was here that he designed the iconic pillpox hat worn by Jacqueline Kennedy to her husband’s 1962 presidential inauguration. Soon his designs were the favourite of celebrities from Biana Jagger, to Liza Minelli, Anjelica Houston, Lauren Bacall and Elizabeth Taylor, cementing Halston’s style as the one of choice for the international jet set of the time. A regular at Studio 54, old photos show Halston lounging with Bianca Jagger and Liza Minnelli, all of the women draped in sensual Halston creations.

The image of him and Anjelica Huston is my favourite –I’m a huge fan of her eccentric beauty and dry wit, and she was a serious Betty, in the words of Cher Horowitz.

These days, vintage Halston, is extremely collectable, and so, we couldn't belive our own eyes, when we not only found one of his dresses, but probably the most beautiful one out there.  SOLD, before we even had time to list it. Expect to see it on the red carpet soon.

WITH VERUSHKA IN THE BUSHKA

The urban nomads have put up their bedouin tents on many a runway the past seasons.  The roots of this style are to be found in the dashing ”Saharienne” collection from ’68, in which Yves Saint Laurent originated the theme.
We recently posted about
60s youth culture , and Laurent’s safari-inspired collection was partially a reaction to the students’ uprising in May ’68, which catalyzed his introduction of women’s trousers into the everyday wear of a fashionable woman.
The Saharienne collection was mainly founded on masculine styles revised in some manner – like this shirt worn by super model Veruschka in French Vogue, August 1968.

The Time's Are A Changin

“The times are a changin’”, as Bob Dylan famously sang in the 1960s. It is a line of pure truth, and something we can all acknowledge even though the year is now 2011.
What Dylan was singing about has been discussed for ages, but one thing is sure – it was the beginning to the counterculture, which had only one purpose – to create a better world. Luckily for us, the new subculture also brought along “the hippies” and their impeccable sense of style; carelessly matching mixed, colourful fabrics with just the right amount of beads and feathers and what not, created a clothing revelation like no other. That’s why, this summer, we’re turning to the hippies for style inspiration.

Wrapped In Silk

The first rule when we go on buying trips is alway, always, always to buy natural fibres. No polyester here!

Silk has a smooth, soft texture that is not slippery, unlike many synthetic fibers, that we try to stay far away from here at Time’s Up. No material can dublicate it’s weight and feel, so why not wrap yourself in it? First a brief tour of the somewhat shady production...

So much work! From tiny silk worm to final product...hours off hard work to bring you these beauties. Not to mention the whole recycling process! Enjoy!

Snow is falling, Christmas is approaching and the masses are frantically flocking to the overcrowded high street to fulfill the needs of their family and friends. What started out as a simple wish list becomes a stressful attempt to get hold of the last available products  in a heavily overheated store which most probably also includes a line from hell to get the bloody thing wrapped! So, why not take the leisurely approach, pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back in your most comfortable chair with your laptop at hand, and purchase your gifts online, packed and sent directly to your front door. We have a wealth of vintage winter garments and accessories which just came in from Paris, Rome, Milan and London, and if you cant make up your mind we are now offering gift vouchers ranging from 50, 100 and 250 us dollars.

HUG-STABLE SWEATERS!

The Huxtables reigned the TV sitcom world in the 1980s bringing an affluent African-American family to the forefront through a stand-up comedian's act, being Bill Cosby's observations on life and family. Costume wise the Huxtable family were known to wear rather garish and outlandish sweaters which we feel are great for the upcoming long and cold winter days. Mohair turtlenecks with colour confetti detailing, a lush grey pearl knitted sweater, colour blocking sweaters and expressionist ones. Pair them with this winter's plethora of high waisted casual trousers or your staple skinny jeans and high platforms. Press the pics below:

Clip it on

Audrey Hepburn was fond of elegant clip-on earrings both on and off duty, from diamond and pearl versions to more subtle flat and rounded logo versions.

At Times Up we have a great selection of vintage designer clip-ons which will lift up a casual jeans and sweater winter day look and perfectly supplement an evening cocktail dress. Just yesterday we got some vintage 70s stunning drop clip-ons from Italy. Check them out...
